Publishing notes

Check your page before publishing

Try the page as a reader, then keep a clear way to undo the release.

Start with one reader task

This checklist covers the page goal, controls, address, language links and a rollback plan.

Write down one thing a reader should be able to do after using your page. Open the preview and try that task without relying on your memory of the draft. If a step needs an explanation that is missing from the page, add it before publishing.

Try the controls and the fallback

Use the keyboard to reach links, buttons and the feedback form. Check that you can see which control has focus. If you include an exercise, try an incorrect answer, the correct answer and reset.

Read the visible explanation without playing the video or exercise. Keep the essential answer in text, and describe what a reader needs to understand from each image.

Check the address and language links

Open the exact address you plan to share. Follow every language link and confirm that it leads to the intended version of this material. Do not add a language link merely because a language appears in a settings file.

Check the title and short description separately from the article body. They should tell a reader what the page helps them do.

Keep a rollback plan

Record the current release before changing it. Preview the new revision, publish it through the normal tool and check the public address again.

If a control breaks or an essential explanation disappears, restore the retained working release. Keep the draft and the reason for the correction so you can review a better revision.

Observe before drawing conclusions

Choose a small question about this material and write down when you will review it. Keep a successful response with no observations distinct from a measured zero or a reporting error.

Use the observation to improve the next choice. A page count is an inventory; it does not tell you how many people found the page useful.
